By entering mapper with any of the following switch options, you will alter the resolution of the map, or cause mapper to perform different functions. The following is a list of these options: MAPPER COMMAND LINE OPTIONS: Color Modes: /E = EGA /V = VGA 640x480x16 colors /S = VGA 320x200x256 colors /Y = Extended VGA 640x400x256 colors /X = Extended VGA 640x480x256 colors /A = Extended VGA 800x600x256 colors /B = Extended VGA 1024x768x256 colors /H = Highest Resolution with 256 colors Processing Instructions: /l [path][file_name].[file_type] = output '.LAB' file of points /o [path][file_name].[file_type] = output run information file /a [path][file_name] = automatic map load on start /p [program_name] = passes control to program from point (S)earch /r creates a '.MPR' file with ranges of data for all files then stops /h help -- prints this message /grid [sample rate] = outputs 'grid.lab' entry for a grid of points /screen puts vector screen coordinates in mapper.crd /save [.map name] /label [text] creates, saves and labels maps in batch mode /label [message_up_to_100_characters] Any path name for data search can by added also, e.g. D:\DATA or \MAPPER\DATA\MAP MAPPER FUNCTION DESCRIPTIONS: Mapper can be operated with or without a two-button mouse. The functions are quite similar, and operation with a mouse is more common than without; therefore, I will describe mapper as though it were mouse driven. NOTE: The menu is mouse operated. The left mouse button is the 'enter' or 'do' key, the right button is the 'escape' or 'exit' key. NOTE: When a menu item is highlighted, do NOT hit the left mouse button in order to access the functions located under it. Simply drag the mouse down and, when the function you wish to perform is highlighted, then hit the left mouse button. Keep in mind that not all menu items, such as 'Enter Line' or 'Get Line' have functions located under them. When this is the case, then hit the left mouse button on the menu item to evoke that function. ANALYZE: This brings up the mapper sub menu: System Locate Label Color Key Plot Return These functions are described below. MAP: Recall: This gives a listing of all the '*.xmp' files that exist in the working directory. Move the bar over the saved file you wish to see and hit . The screen will quickly fill with the file information. All the functions work on the saved file. Save: This option saves all that is on the screen. The first save is made to the filename 'mapper00.xmp', the second is 'mapper01.xmp' and so on. You can rename the files to more obvious names in DOS or a text editor. This function enables you to give a 'slide show' on your computer without waiting for the maps to draw. If you wish to view these same images through imvis or browse type 'xmp2lbl '. This will create a '.lbl' file from the saved '.xmp' file. This will only work if the system is running in extended VGA (the /x option and default for mapper). If the system is running in VGA, for example, then '.vmp' files will be created by mapper. Mouse Off: This will disable the mouse and enable the keyboard to operate mapper. ZOOM: Move Box: The zoom box is moved with the mouse. Either you can drag the box by holding down the left button, or you can jump the box from place to place by moving the cursor and hitting the left button. When the box is positioned appropriately, hit the right button to access the zoom menu. Larger: By hitting the left button, the box size is increased. Hit the right button to return to the zoom menu. Smaller: By hitting the left button, the box size will decrease. Hit the right button to return to the zoom menu. Status: This will display the size of the pixel in the center of the box along with the lat/lon of the center pixel.. It is this information which can be used to change the first line in the control '.map' file. Quit Zoom: Allows you to exit the zoom function without zooming. This returns you back to the main menu. Exit&Plot: When you are happy with the size and location of the zoom box, this function executes the zoom and redraws the map at the desired zoom level. PROJECTION: You can change the projection of the map to any of the following projections Lambert Albers Mercator Polar Stereographic Sinusoidal Plate Carr'ee Move the highlight bar over the projection of choice and hit the left button. The linework will be redrawn in that projection. DRAW: Lines: A cursor will appear. Hit the left button at the location for one of the endpoints. Move the cursor to the other endpoint and hit the left button. A line connecting the points will appear. This is useful in conjunction with the annotate function. It allows for the ability to 'point' to an item of interest on the map. As with the annotate function, this modification to the map is not saved. It is only a temporary - modification. The only way to save these modifications is to save the map. When you recall the map, you will see this line. Text: (Annotate) This allows you to add text to the screen. The bottom line of the screen will turn black. Type in your text using the keyboard. The right arrow key makes the text larger, the left arrow key makes the text smaller. The up and down keys cycle you through the colors available for the print. When you are satisfied, hit ; a box the size of the text will appear and can be moved anywhere on the screen. When the location is good hit the left button and the text will appear on the screen at that location. This modification to the map is not saved to a file and will not be seen in later zooms. It is generally used prior to saving a map, then when you recall that map you will see the text. This is useful in the 'slide show' of recalled maps. Graticule: This will plot a scaled graticule over your map. The latitude and longitude will be marked in black. QUIT: This will exit you from the mapper program. The following functions are found in the submenu. This submenu can be accessed from clicking on 'Analyze'. SYSTEM: Zoom: Operates exactly the same way as described above. Del Mark: If a 'mapper.mrk' file exists, this function will delete it. Hide Menu: Temporarily removes the menu from the screen. To see the menu again, hit the left button. Del Outline: This will delete the linework, from the screen only, not from the files, contained in the first group. Status: This will give you the latitude and longitude and the resolution in km of the center pixel of the screen. Distance: This will display the distance petween points in kilometers and miles. Move the cursor to the first point and hit the left button, then move to the second point and hit the left button. If ther are more than two points, the display will show the total distance as well as the distance between the last two points entered. LOCATE: This allows you to gather information from the screen. Move the mouse to any point on the screen and hit the left button. In the lower left part of the screen you will see the color-fill identification number, the description of that color (generally rock type), and the lat/lon of that pixel. Hit the right button to return to the menu. LABEL: The functions under this menu heading extract information from the files and plot that information on the screen. Lines Vsml: A menu containing the group names found within your control '.map' file appears. Move the cursor over the file of interest and hit the left button. Next, move the mouse over the line on the map that (1) belongs in the group you picked and (2) you wish to have labeled; hit the left button. The attribute of that line is printed on the line in very small text. Lines Sml: Same as Lines Vsml except the text is printed slightly larger. Lines Med: Same as Lines Vsml, but the text is larger than Lines Sml. This size is generally the must readable without being too large. Lines Lg: Same as Lines Vsml, but the text is at its largest size. Mark Same: This is the function used to create a 'mapper.mrk' file to add points to the map. A box will appear in the left corner of your screen. Enter the text and hit . Move the mouse and hit the left button where you want that text to appear. Continue moving the mouse and hitting the left button until all the places requiring that same text are marked. Hit the right button to return to the main menu. The text, along with all the lat/lon points are put into the file 'mapper.mrk'. Mark Diff.: This is basically the same as the function 'Mark Same' except when you move the mouse and hit the left button, you will see the box in the left corner appear again. Type in different text, hit , and move the mouse over the appropriate place on the screen. This function is useful for marking towns, since all the town names will require different text. Again, the information will be placed in 'mapper.mrk'. All Colors: This will print on the screen all the information contained within the 'filename.blb' file. Be careful with this function, as it will create 'an explosion in a spaghetti factory' on your screen! One Color: This will plot information contained within the 'filename.blb' file only where you want it to plot. Move the cursor to a polygon on the screen and hit the left button. The color description (as defined in the control '.map' file) will be plotted. You can continue to label as many polygons as you like. To return to the main menu, hit the right button. This function is recommended over the 'All Colors' function. COLOR: Edit: This allows you to edit the colors on the screen by changing the intensity (I), hue (H) and saturation (S) with the number key pad. Make sure that NUMLOCK is off. Flash: Move the cursor over a color on the map, or a color on the key (if the key has been plotted on the screen) and hit the left button a couple of times. You will see all the polygons tagged with that same color flash to white and back again. Again, the right button returns you to the menu. Darker: This makes the map colors darker but keeps the line colors unchanged. This allows overlays to be more pronounced. Brighter: This does just the opposite of 'Darker'. Paint: This is how you color-fill the polygons. In order for this function to be of any use, you should enter mapper by the command line : mapper /l temp.lab KEY: Small: This plots a small key on the right side of your screen. Large: This plots a large key on the right side of your screen. PLOT: This menu heading is 'intelligent.' If an option is not available (for example, if no '.grf' files exist), then it will not be highlighted in this menu. Lines: This gives you a listing of all the group names located within your control '.map' file. Move the highlight bar over the desired overlay and hit the left button. You will see the linework plot on your map. Exit returns you to the main menu. Graphs: A menu containing all the '.grf' files appears. Move the highlight bar over the desired '.grf' file and hit the left button. The information will be plotted on the screen. All Graphs: This will plot all the '.grf' files located in the directory you are working. Patterns: If a 'pattern' section exists within the control '.map' file, then you can plot the pattern overlays on the screen. The patterns will also be plotted when you click on the 'exit' heading of this sub-menu. Icon Loctn: If an 'icon' section exists within your control '.map' file, then you can plot icons on the screen. This function operates in the same manner as the Patterns function. Icon Names: If you are near an icon that has been plotted on the screen, you can move the mouse cursor near that icon to access its file name and location on the hard disk (or CD-ROM). Icon Files: This will allow you to plot either and image or a text file that is associated with a specific icon. Move the mouse near the icon and hit the left button, you will see either the image or the text displayed. Hit to return to the map. EXIT: This returns you to the main menu. Patterns and overlays turned 'ON' in your control '.map' file will plot at this time.
