Massive Tax Increase Will Only Increase Pain at Pump

Washington, DC – Rep. Tom Price (GA-06-R) issued the following statement after the House Democrats passed their Fiscal Year 2009 budget. Though many Americans are already facing gas prices above four dollars per gallon, the Democrat budget plan contains the largest tax increase in American history.

“From gas to groceries, prices for American consumers are going through the roof,” said Rep. Price. “As if hard-working families are not feeling enough pain, House Democrats now seek to thrust the largest tax increase in our nation’s history upon American taxpayers. Strained family budgets now face the prospect of an extra two thousand dollar hit every year, all so House Democrats can spend more money on their liberal priorities.

“This budget clearly demonstrates how out of touch House Democrats are with struggling consumers. While Democrat leaders continue to brazenly ignore the effect of rising gas prices, Republicans recognize that the American people deserve to keep more of their hard-earned money. By making tough decisions together, we can meet our obligations and balance the budget without this historic tax hike. We must restore the American vision that respects taxpayers and rewards their diligence.”
