The classified image was the result of cooperative work between the National Atlas Information System (NAIS) group of NRCan, the Manitoba Remote Sensing Centre and Forestry Canada. Other contributions in that work came from the GIS Division and the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing. The original vector data set was generalized using the Arc/Info software. The method used was simple: all polygons with area less than 50 sq km were eliminated, except for those representing built-up areas. No attempt was made to smooth lines. However all pseudo-nodes were removed. The coastline is that obtained from the vectorization process. No attempt was made to substitute the lines representing the coastline with any other available data set. It is felt, by comparing with the 1:2million coastline from the National Atlas data set, that the lines present in the generalized data set are adequate for a 7.5million scale representation. N.B. This data set is meant to be used at a minimal scale of 7.5M. and is best for cartographic-type applications or world-scale applications. DESCRIPTION OF COVERAGES ======================== The Canadian land is divided in two portions (due to limitation in the Arc/Info software - 10000 arcs/polygon). "vegeast", "vegwest". The border between Manitoba and Ontario is used as the division line. However, connection between the two portions can be obtained since all nodes are snapped between the two portions. The two covers contain both line and polygon topology. The arc/info .AAT file contains an attribute called CODE. The value is 0 for all lines except those lines representing the east-west boundary which have a value of -1. The arc/info .PAT file contains an attribute called F_CODE. The value ranges from 1 to 11, representing a vegetation-land cover type. The arc/info look-up table VEG_CODE.LUT contains three items: F_CODE, SYMBOL (for display purposes - can be changed by the user) and DESCRIPTION. DESCRIPTION OF ARC/INFO COVERAGES: VEGEAST: 2220 polygons, 4532 arcs VEGWEST: 5186 polygons, 10896 arcs ICE: 140 polygons (.... no arc topology) - this cover is only given for reference . It has not been processed as completely as the other in order to remove small polygons (< 50 sq km). The polygons carry the F_CODE attribute where polygons with f_code value equals to 13 represent polar ice, those with values of 3 represent inclosed water and that with values of 0 and no labels are those polygons where land occurs, except for the oceanic water body.
