Research Project: Phenotypic Characterization of Sorghum Bicolor Carotenoid Endosperm Content

Location: Crop Germplasm Research

2005 Annual Report

4d.Progress report.
This report serves to document research conducted under a Specific Cooperative Agreement between ARS and Cornell University. Additional details of research can be found in the report for the parent CRIS 6202-21000-022-00D Sorghum Genomics and Germplasm Evaluation. This is a new project, with the goal of evaluating sorghum germplasm accessions for carotenoid content. In FY 2005, sorghum germplasm accessions were grown and samples were collected for carotenoid measurements. Endosperms were collected from a wide range of sorghum accessions, including wild relatives and landraces. The work, as it progresses, will provide the required information to permit plant breeders to incorporate germplasm with high carotenoid content into their breeding stocks. Ultimately, the work will result in the development of improved, more nutritious sorghum varieties that can be grown by U.S. farmers.
