Christmas Sunset 2003
back to spaceweather.com

Summary: When the sun set on Christmas Day 2003, sky watchers looked west and saw a beautiful conjunction between Venus and the crescent moon. The two were bright enough to see even before the sky grew dark.

The earthshine was so bright on the crescent Moon I could see all the Maria and detail of crater on the dark side. I set up my Orion 5' RFT refractor and took a photograph using 25mm eyepiece and my Sony Digital Still Camera DSC-P71. The most striking feature on the Moon is the crater Aristarchus which has a history of showing star like on the dark side of the Moon. The image was taken at 5:49 P.M. CST or 23:49 UT. The earthshine present tonight was by far the best I have seen in many a lunation.

Both images were taken right after 5:30 pm EST. It wasn't dark enough to see any 'earthshine' but was clearly visible about 1/2 hour later. Sony Maciva MVC-FD100 camera, ISO 400 with +2.0EV setting.

A heavenly way to end Christmas 2003. The Moon and Venus came out of the clouds long enough for me to snap this photo with my Sony Mavica digital camera.

The clouds cleared just in time to catch the Moon and Venus only three degrees apart.

Crescent Moon, Venus and the last reflection of the Christmas Day sunset on the ice of Green Bay. Taken at 16:45 with a Canon G2 digital, f2.2, 1/60 sec. exposure. I was standing out on the ice listening to the booms echoes across the Bay as pressure ridges freeze while watching Venus emerge from a beautiful winter sunset. This extraordinary scene brings to mind the phrase 'Heavenly Peace'!
