Welcome to the Microscopy and Microanalysis Public Domain Software Library Collection All software in these collection is public domain and may be freely copied and distributed to any interested individuals. This library contains the following: In the folder called ANL/NJZ Software Library 1994 you will find instructions as well as a complete copy of the libraries, instructions for users and organizers as well as useful documents to print out for distribution. EMMPDL - Electron Microscopy and Microanalysis Public Domain Library Administered by Nestor J. Zaluzec of Argonne National Laboratory MASLib - Microbeam Analysis Society Library Administered by John F. Mansfield of the University of Michigan Mac & PC Freeware/Shareware Library Collected by Nestor J. Zaluzec of Argonne National Laboratory Info Dir/Folder- Information concerning access to communication with the EMMPDL, MASLIB, the MSA/ANL BBS, the Microscopy Listserver using Modems, Email, and Internet. As well as general information about this library Administered by Nestor J. Zaluzec of Argonne National Laboratory Each of these collections/libraries is organized in slightly different manners. Please take a moment to read this summary it will save you much time and allow the maxmium number of users to make use of the facilities provided. You will not be able to copy the contents of the all the libraries in any single session session. The current software collection is in excess of 400 Mbytes and thus you should be selective. Take a few minutes of time to think about your selections before starting. File Types By their nature the files in these libraries have a variety of data types and formats, in addition, the files are also come from a variety of different computers and operating systems. Here is a quick summary of the major types of files which you may encounter. Some files are compressed, and decompression routines can also be found on this disk in the utilities subdirectory/folder for the respective platforms (Mac, PC, DEC, ......). Each file will have a distinct name, however, some files have names followed by a period (ù) then an addtitional 3 character extension. These extensions generally refer to special characteristics of the file and the table below summarizes the major file types which you will find on this disk. Binary files are usually specific to an application. ASCII files are files which contain ASCII characters (i.e. printing characters) , however, they may not necessarily be TEXT which you can read. This is due to the fact that some systems convert binary files into ASCII for transmission over networks. Each contribution in the library has a Abstract (.ABS), Source Code (.SRC) and Documentation (.DOC) file. All three files are also merged into into a single file called Total (.TOTAL). The abstract file summarizes each contribution, listing the authors name, the purpose of the code, which computer system it was designed to operate upon the and general requirements for making the code operational. Generally, all the code in this library will need to be recompiled to run on a given computer and thus you will need to insure you have access to the appropriate compiler as documented in the file instructions. Some of the code in this library includes compiled and executables(.SAV, or .EXE). The files are organized according to the general areas of Microscopy, Diffraction, and Microanalysis using their most general abbreviations (CTEM, XEDS, EELS........)The Figure below summarizes the topics. All the abstracts are summarized in a single file called EMMPDL Abstracts, which is contained in the Info Dir/Folder. MASLIB The MASLIB is organized by program name. Most contributions in this library have abstracts (.ABS) nearly all contain executable versions (.EXE)of the contributions, virtually none have source code. The Figure below summarizes the MASLIB contents. All the abstracts are summarized in a single file called MASLIB Abstracts, which is contained in the Info Dir/Folder. ANL/NJZ Freeware/Shareware Library ( Mac's & PC's) This collection of software is organized by topic and computer platform (MacIntosh or PC). Some of the code is related to imaging, microscopy and/or microanalysis and represents either demonstration or executable code which has not been officially contributed to either the EMMPDL or MASLIB. The balance of the programs are generally useful programs that I have found for PC's and Mac's. These include programs which deal with communications, compression, databases, editors, graphics, and general utilities. While this code is organized by topic there is NO listing of the programs, nor are there any abstracts, or source code. Some programs do include documentations files. General Information Dir/Folder This folder contains information on how to access the EMMPDL, ANL/MSA BBS, the Microscopy Listserver as well as a complete abstract summary of all files in the EMMPDL, and MASLIB. Identical Information is contained within all 3 Folders, however, it is formated for the respective platforms. The default word processor used in all these files is MicroSoft Word. The Text files are simple ASCII text will all attributes stripped off. The contents fo the General Information files are shown below. FTP An Anonymous FTP site is now operational at ANL all the software in this library will be available using standard file transfer protocols. Host: WWW.AMC.ANL.GOV User: Anonymous Pass: Your Email Address WWW A World Wide Web (WWW) site is now operational at ANL all the software in this library will be available using standard file transfer protocols. Host: WWW.AMC.ANL.GOV User: Anonymous Pass: Your Email Address Recommended Procedure for Accessing these Libraries 1.) Scan the posted abstract lists for the EMMPDL and MASLIB to see if specific software you want is available. 2.) Choose the computer platform whose Disk Drive contains the file you wish to copy. Please check for information posted by the Workshop organizers for specific details which may apply to the how the files are loaded on the computers at this workshop. EMMPDL, and MASLIB files should be on all computers. Freeware/Shareware files will be found on thier repective platforms or on the original CDROM disk which was send to ICEM. 3.) Insert a floppy disk into the appropriate drive of the computer and copy the desired files. 4.) Remember everyone should copy the all General information files which can be found in the Info/Dir Folder. Nestor J.
