CDDIS Bulletin - June 1991
Volume 6 No. 5

In this issue:

On the cover: GPS Site Locations for GIG'91 April 1 Data Set

Erasable Optical Disk System Installed

In 1990 an erasable optical disk system was procured and installed on the CDDIS MicroVAX. This unit, manufactured by Alphatronix, contains two 5.25Ò Sony optical disk drives with a capacity of 325 mbytes per platter. An additional 650 mbytes (325 mbytes on each of two disks) is near-line by simply dismounting a disk and flipping it over to access the other side. To a user of the system these drives appear like any other magnetic disk drives. The device supports a typical VMS directory file structure and allows files created there to be deleted with full recovery of space allocation after deletion.

Thus far, these disks have been utilized to archive the raw and RINEX data from various GPS experiments submitted to the CDDIS. To date over 1.3 gbytes of GPS data have been stored in this manner. Interested users can then electronically transfer selected data sets directly to their home institutions via DECnet or TCP/IP. GPS data has also been sent to users having similar disk devices operational on their computer facilities.

The current configuration of the CDDIS computing facility is shown in the figure on the following page.

Networking Directory Updates

There have been several important changes to the most recent issue (April 1991) of the CDP Personnel and Networking Directory. Since a new directory will not be generated for several months, important changes are discussed in this article.

We regret that the published FAX number of Dr. Bernard Minster is incorrect; it should read 619-534-5332. Interested parties should make this correction in their directory.

In addition, many of the OMnet accounts listed in the directory have been discontinued as of May 1, 1991. Below is a list of the cancelled accounts.

As a result of the removal of the CDP OMnet account, the TELEX number for the Crustal Dynamics Project has changed. The new TELEX number is 248496 NASCOM GBLT.

DATA BITS AND BYTES

This section is designed to give brief notices of special events, new data sets, or problems encountered in recent months.

New GPS Data Submissions

The first GIG '91 data set, called the April 1 data set, has been sent by JPL in RINEX format and archived in the CDDIS. The sites included in this release are the 20 global Rogue sites and two sites in Japan. These data span the January 22 through February 13, 1991 time period.

A local GPS survey of two Fort Ord, CA monuments (NCMN 7266 1981 and BRUSH 2) has been submitted by Bendix. These fourteen 15-minute observations span two days in May 1988 and were performed using two Macrometer II receivers. The CDDIS has archived the raw data from this experiment.

Test Sets of SLR Normal Points

In addition to other SLR data processing changes, as of the March 1991 A release, test sets of normal points for STARLETTE, AJISAI, and ETALON-I and -II will be produced and distributed to interested parties. Users should contact the CDDIS staff if they wish to receive these test sets of normal points.
