W., TW- A325 Washington, D. C. 20554 Dear Ms. Salas: RE COMMENTS ON NOTICE OF PROPOSED RULEMAKING IN THE MATTER OF VIDEO DESCRIPTION OF VIDEO PROGRAMMING MM Docket No. 99- 339 I'm glad for the chance to comment on the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking which would mandate use of audio description of visual images by television networks and stations using the Secondary Audio Programming (SAP) channel. I am in favor of voluntary audio description, but am against making it mandatory. What I really want is access to emergency information scrolled across the screen, sports scores, and printed identification of speakers and other vital messages during newscasts, commercials, and other national and local programs. While I like descriptive video during movies and other entertainment, I seldom take such things in, with or without description. As a blind mother, I want access to the same information my sighted peers have available to them free on TV-- school closings, scores, weather watches and warnings, health and safety tips, etc. I would appreciate your making this kind of thing mandatory, but not descriptive video. Thank you. Barbara Walker 2224 S. 35th Street Lincoln, NE 68506- 6011 1
