Description/Abstract With the introduction of its new 401 combustion turbine, Westinghouse has developed a mid-sized engine nominally rated at 80 MW that fulfills a power category between its 251B12 at 49 MW and the 501D5 at 107 MW. The new 401 is scheduled to ship in mid-1998, with commercial operation slated for late-1998. The origin of the 401 engine is a scaled down version of the 501G, itself a very high efficiency combustion turbine. Designed for reliability and ease of maintenance, the 401 shares the same features that have been well-proven though experience in other Westinghouse combustion turbine models, including a two-bearing rotor; horizontally split casings; cold-end generator drive; axial exhaust; access to critical hot parts without cover lift; and all flow path components removable without rotor lift. Capable of operation in both simple and combined cycle, the 401 can operate on conventional fuels, as well as on coal-derived low heat value gas produced in an integrated gasification combined cycle power plant. 3 figs., 1 tab.
