Statement of Significance (as of designation - April 19, 1993):
This is the point from which the lands acquired through the Louisiana Purchase of 1803 were subsequently surveyed: the land surveys for all or part of the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, North and South Dakota, Wyoming, and Montana were measured from this point in the middle of an eastern Arkansan swamp. For more than 100 years, the site lay forgotten until its rediscovery during a resurvey of county lines in 1921. The granite monument at the site was erected in 1926.

Condition:
The surrounding land use, beyond the state park boundaries, is still primarily farmland and is not a threat to the monument. An adjacent parcel of land next to the park (NW border), approximately 590 acres, is for sale (parcel previously owned for a Duck Hunting Club). Arkansas State Parks and Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission would like to co-purchase the property to protect the Headwaters Swamp habitat but lack the essential funding. Water management by surrounding land owners does impact the swamp ecosystem.

The state park where the Louisiana Purchase boundary marker is located was renovated in 2002-2003 for the 200th anniversary of the purchase and new interpretive exhibits were installed. The wood boardwalk leading to the NHL (approx. 960 linear feet), signs, wayside exhibit panels, and restrooms remain in good condition.
