Arkansan wins 2003 National Earth Team NRCS Employee of the Year Award

LITTLE ROCK, Ark., March 26, 2004 -- Debra Crawford, district conservationist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources Conservation Service in Miller County, Ark., was recently awarded the 2003 National Earth Team NRCS Employee of the Year award for her leadership and contributions to the NRCS South Central Region Earth Team Bluebird Trail.

The bluebird trail is the largest trail of its kind constructed by Earth Team volunteers.  The adjoining counties of the four states of Arkansas (Miller County), Louisiana (Caddo Parish), Oklahoma (McCurtain County) and Texas (Bowie County) met to join a trail of more than 600 bluebird boxes.

Earth Team volunteers in Miller County, constructed 160 Eastern Bluebird nesting boxes and installed them throughout the county.  Housing (and habitat) shortages can endanger any animal species.  But when these brilliantly colored songbirds migrated to Miller County and surveyed their dwindling habitat, they found 160 nice, new, safe accommodations in which to lay their eggs and raise their babies.

The Arkansas portion of the trail was sponsored by the Miller County Conservation District and Natural Resources Conservation Service.
