Arkansan Named to FEMA Council

Boozman Congratulates Arkansan named to proposed National Advisory Council

Washington, Jun 19 -

U.S. Representative John Boozman (R-AR) today congratulated Pulaski County Coroner Mark Malcom for his proposed selection to the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) National Advisory Council.

Malcom was named to the council as a selection by FEMA Administrator R. David Paulison. Rep. Boozman nominated Malcom to the White House to be a part of the council, which is being created to advise Paulison on all aspects of preparedness and emergency management in an effort to ensure close coordination with its partners across the country.

“I am very proud to have an Arkansan serving on this very important committee to better prepare America in responding to disasters,” Boozman said. “Mark Malcom is a great addition to the FEMA team. His expertise and background in dealing with natural disasters around the world makes him a valuable member of the council, and an important voice advising FEMA for the future.”

Malcom has been a member of the Pulaski County Coroner’s Office for 21 years, and was appointed Coroner in 1995. The only full-time coroner in Arkansas, Malcom has served as Director of Field Operations for Kenyon International Emergency Services during the search and recovery of those who died following Hurricane Katrina and he also served as Director of Morgue Operations in Phuket, Thailand following the December, 2004, tsunami.

“The men and women nominated to serve on the National Advisory Committee are recognized experts across the range of emergency management disciplines,” said Paulison.  “Their extensive knowledge and diverse points of view will be a great asset as they advise us on how we can best respond to natural and manmade disasters together.”

The development of the National Advisory Council was set into motion by the Post-Katrina Emergency Management Reform Act of 2006.  Members are appointed by the Administrator and represent a geographic and significant cross section of officials from emergency management and law enforcement, and include homeland security directors, adjutants general, emergency response providers from state, local, and tribal governments, private sector, and nongovernmental organizations.

The Council intends to hold quarterly meetings each year.  Pending final approval of disclosure forms that must by law be submitted be certain appointees, the first meeting is expected to be convened this fall.
