Watershed-Wide Projects of the Watershed Planning Services Staff

Watershed Planning Services (WPS) works with local service centers, NRCS partners and other private land owners, providing natural resources technical assistance. WPS planning products are primarily inventories and analyses designed to help achieve watershed management objectives.

CalWater - California Interagency Watershed Mapping Committee

CalWater is the spatial dataset of watersheds in California, developed by an Interagency Watershed Mapping Committee. For many years, the NRCS and other State and Federal agencies, have been working with this committee to map the watersheds and hydrologic units in the State of California. This committee is working to update the CalWater dataset, and finalize the California data for the National Watershed Boundary Dataset (WBD).

Cosumnes River Watershed

The Sloughouse Resource Conservation District (RCD) and Elk Grove Service Center requested our assistance in preparing a Resources Inventory in the upper watershed, to be used by the Cosumnes River Task Force as part of its overall effort to address flooding problems in the lower watershed. The Resources Inventory was completed as Phase I of the project. The Task Force is now moving to complete Phase II of the project.

Klamath Basin

The Lava Beds and Klamath RCD requested our assistance in balancing the water needs of agriculture and other natural resources in the Klamath Basin. This is a new request and the scope of work is still being developed. It will be a joint study with the NRCS in Oregon. The California part of the basin includes portions of both Modoc and Siskiyou Counties.

Stemple Creek Watershed

The Marin-Sonoma RCD and Petaluma Service Center requested suggestions of ways to improve water quality through technical and financial assistance to landowners who install conservation practices to reduce animal waste runoff, restore riparian habitat, and improve land management. A watershed Project Plan and Environmental Assessment has been developed to improve water quality in Stemple Creek and the Estero de San Antonio in Marin and Sonoma Counties California.

Upper Putah Creek

The Eastlake RCD and the Upper Putah Creek Stewardship Committee requested assistance in preparing a Water Resources Inventory, to be tied to the Army Corps of Engineers comprehensive watershed management plan. NRCS work will be used as in-kind services by the RCD as its financial share of the Corps' efforts. A detailed plan of work has been prepared and implementation is expected to begin Spring 2002.
