Description:

Abstract:: The data set contains overstory tree species composition, structure and diversity and understory plant species composition, cover and diversity prior to any treatments, following mechanical treatment and following fire treatments.

Purpose:: The data set was developed to enable researchers to examine the differential effects of mechanical treatment alone and mechancial treatment followed by prescribed fire during either the winter, spring or summer season on forest vegetation. We wanted to determine whether mechanical treatment alone could actually serve as a substitute for fire. We also wanted to learn which time interval was best for reintroducing fire, once mechanical treatment had been implemented (3 months, 6 months or 9 months using winter, spring and summer burning, respectively).

Process_Description:: Randomized complete block design of 5 treatments replicated 4 times and blocked across obvious topographic variation of the site (low moist areas to higher somewhat drier soil areas). Each 1.2 ha treatment plot contained five 10x10 m subplots and five 15 m line-transects. Overstory data was derived from the rectangular plots and understory data was obtained from the line-transects.
