The three data tables (lgtreesum.dbf, studytrees.dbf, and plot10acre.dbf) in this data set are hierarchically related and are linked by two key fields. (Site_no) is the primary field that links all three tables. (Keyid) links studytrees.dbf with plot10acre.dbf. There is a one-to-many relationship for each subsequent table. Lgtreesum has one record per site, studytrees has one record per old-growth study tree (several per site), and plot10acre has one record for each tree on a plot including the old-growth study tree. Keyid in studytrees and plot10acre is a 5-digit numeric field that combines site number with tree number. In plot10acre the trees are further differentiated by designation as a studytree (0) or a competing tree (>0) in the (comptree_n) field. Definitions of the variables can be found in the following sections organized from the table with the most records (plot10acre) to the table with the least records (lgtreesum). Following that are sections with species codes and the structure of each data table.

Stand structure was characterized based on four to five randomly placed 0.1-ha circular plots on which we recorded species and diameter of all stumps and all trees at least 1.37 meters tall. We classified the range of density treatments that occurred at the treated sites into two current density classes (Low) and (Medium) differentiated by having average stand basal areas greater than or less than 20 m2 ha-1. Controls were coded as (C). We tried to select study trees that were at least 76 centimeters diameter at breast height. Two study trees have smaller diameters: a Douglas-fir at Conde Creek 3 and a ponderosa pine at Woodpecker Springs. The effect of competition from nearby trees on growth of the study trees was assessed by recording the diameters of all trees and stumps >= 25 cm dbh or stump height on .04-ha plots around each study tree. Competing tree crowns were recorded in three vertical positions relative to the study tree’s crown. Tree diameters and heights are in centimeters and meters, respectively, unless otherwise indicated and basal area is calculated in square meters.
