Congressman Shuster Meets and Congratulates Winner of VSA Art Contest

Washington, DC – Congressman Bill Shuster met with the first place winner of the Very Special Arts (VSA) contest for young artists with disabilities. Jordan Rhoat’s work was unveiled on Capitol Hill and it will later move to an exhibit at the Smithsonian. Rhoat, of Tyrone, PA, also won $10,000 in recognition of his art.

“This young man is an inspiration to us all,” said Shuster. “He has showed incredible talent and drive and we should all work to be more like Jordan. Despite his disability, he has worked hard at something he loves, and been successful at it. It is a testament to his will and a true triumph of spirit.”

Rhoat has a condition known as Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita. It is a condition he was born with that causes fibrous deposits on his bones and joints and severely limits mobility.

The theme of this year’s VSA contest is “Destination Anywhere”. This year's exhibition offers $60,000 in cash awards to 15 young artists with disabilities, between 16 and 25 years old.

“I’d like to thank VSA for their positive contributions to the lives of disabled youngsters,” said Shuster. “They have the potential to really make a difference in a young person’s life.”
