Friday, Sept. 27, 2002 - 9 AM - Garage ======================================= PHG, D. Augustine, M. May, D. Miller, D. Schmitt, J. Riordan Shunt Status Discussion First with Howie Pfeffer: ================================================= tested single air cooled heat sink for FETs - too hot will add 2nd heat sink to FETs resistors are cooled by water have all materials in hand, except for this water cooled heat sink for Resistors have the isolation transormer have been running the fiber optic link for reference voltage working on controls and interlocks - need to build some electronics I asked what date it would all be ready for installation in B4 SB Howie doesn't know, but did not react negatively to January after he asked, I told Howie that I had signed T&M req for cables for Jim Ranson Howie said they would be using one long pair for resistors and one long pair for FETs in order to better balance current sharing stability. the system is spec'ed for 230 A +- 40 A or actully for the entire shunt 5.32% +- 1% which variation can be accomodated without changing Resistors easy enough to change resistors if neede PHG to check whether this 230 A shunt value still holds for the specific FMI dipoles that we will be using. 30oct02: PHG asked Dan Wolff whether a full scale power test (no beam) of the shunt can be done with the existing Lambertsons (instead of FMI dipoles) to check systems aspects and stablity during TEV ramping conditions before we committ. Dan's first comment was that this might require re-adjustment of shunt (especially resistors) = extra work. I asked whether just use what you got to produce a different shunt current (whatever for current resistors). Dan agreed to consider, would take pressure off later, before committing to major renovation of Lambertsons, although he says the EE Dept is used to working under "no fall-back" - absolutely has to work situations. Mechanical Issues: ================== Mike May will be away until October 16 (660) 947-7563 mikepmay@earthlink.com = Schedule for C0 Lamberson Replacement still 6 weeks in January, but CDF & D0 wants as short as possible Dave A says could be done in 3 weeks using 2 shifts over 24 hours if this mini 3 week shutdown, other work contemplated would include FMI 30 sector - repair vacuum leaks Recycler 30 sector - prepare for pelletron hookup Joseph Pathyill - maintenance of feeders and relays at MSS Joseph Pathyill - (dependent on not damp, not cold weather) treat transformer oil to remove acetylene buildup SCHEDULE and Length of shutdown is needed to: rent forklift secure contract personnel (6 week shutdown) train/qualify Fermilab manpower PHG to write letter to Steve Holmes Access Qualifications: Mike May (none) and Mike Mascione (Controlled Access) Dave A would like to persuade John Cooper and Bob Kephart to have all PPD and TDmanpower qualified for entry and work in any accelerator get this ES&H qualifications done beforehand what if we can't rent the big fork lift? any alternatives? Egyptian methods - staircase? Storage checkerboard now scrap future // Magnet Storage Bldg Lambertsons //===== Quads // D0 Service Bldg Quads =====// //=== Bypasses // C0 Assembly Bldg Bypasses ====// FMI dipoles ======== ??? ask J. Cooper Materials: flags: have plenty of 4" x 1/2" copper at railhead, also Del Miller and Dan Darimont stands: pieces due today, a few things still arriving, Danny Snee estimates all by next week James Mohns is collecting these parts when have all the pieces, Dave A. will assign BD/MSD tech to assemble Heater Tapes: two tubes removed (about an hour) Arnold Germain training Jack Moore ==> 2 heaters installed - only reached 70 deg-C (how many run?) will be installing 4 heaters on each side of pipe two above midplane, two below expect this operation to be completed by Oct 4 Questions of Davis-Bacon Determination and legality/safety of Fermilab people operating cranes, forklift, rigging Next Meeting? play by ear after Mike May returns and Mike, Del, and Dave have next update of schedule 30oct03: PHG gave task list to Dave Augustine with my Davis-Bacon assignment guesses for tasks. I asked him for comments and corrections. My list also included 5-6 items NOT included on Dave's spreadsheet. I asked whether this could be done with double-shifting trades people. Dave didn't think this would be a manpower availability problem in January, but would talk with John Kedzierski (FESS/T&M Office). This double-shifting answer is needed for decision on 3.5 week January shutdown for warm solution. Action Item List (27sept) ========================= Completed Action Items (27sept) =============================== 9/27: PHG spoke to Mike Church to keep B48 kicker magnets (MSB or TPL) fragile 3" ceramic beam pipe from Coors is important to maintain see Tom Dombeck's vulnerability report Mike Church says "keep the B48 kickers" 10/3 PHG sent e-mail to Steve Holmes stressing need to know beforehand SCHEDULE and Length (3 or 6 weeks) of shutdown is needed to: rent forklift secure contract personnel (for 6 week shutdown) train/qualify "borrowed" Fermilab manpower beforehand 10/5: SH: will have a preliminary schedule for this shutdown at Nov 5 Run II Strategy meeting 10/1 PHG to check whether this 230 A shunt value still holds for the specific FMI dipoles that we will be using. 9/30 - checked => 240 A what about low end 5.3% +- 1%, both going up and going down? 10/1: Mike Church says +- 1% is plenty of range for shunt 10/1: Howie Pfeffer says could increase if necessary at expense of running FETs a little bit hotter 11/4 Dave Augustine - converse with John Kedzierski (FESS/T&M Office) on whether trades people would be available for two-shift operations during a shutdown in January. 4nov- Dave reported that John K says ironworkers should be available (slow construction during January). However, he doesn't know the shift differential and due to the large number (35) of ironworkers for shutdown, this would require 1 (or 2) supervisors on site. 11/4 Howie Pfeffer (31oct) - promised a time date (by 1nov) as to when shunt will be fully packaged at B4 Service Building in order to begin long term reliability and systems testing. 4nov- Howie stated the shunt would be available in B4 6 weeks from 1nov which is 20 December. I'm up tight with that being so close to Christmas for a 13 January start of shutdown. The critical path items are mechanical work for rack and controls layout and impelmentation - if we are on for 13 January, can more EE Dept. personnel be assigned? 12/23 PHG - check with Dave Carlson Questions of Davis-Bacon Determination and legality/safety of Fermilab people operating cranes, forklift, rigging 9/27: checked with Steve Holmes who said to discuss w/Carlson 9/27: invtied to meet with Carlson and John Chapman (DOE) at Dave Carlson's, Thrusday, October 3 - 8:30 AM 10/3: John Chapman away, try again next week 10/3: I asked Dave Augustine for copy of schedule/worklist which will help in discussion of Davis-Bacon issues 10/10: I met with Carlson, Chapman, and Bob Grant, plan is for me to provide 1 page introduction, plan, and justification stressing Luminosity and efficiency (safety) of change for short shutdown. Go with contractors for longer shudown for non-Fermilab special tasks (unhook, rehook, vacuum, align, etc.) 12/19: Joe Collins transmitting to DOE, gave C0 org chart avg 10 contractors:5 Fermilab::$ 200 K : $ 100 K 12/23: approved by Jane Monhart
