West Fork Bitterroot River Road Project
(along Painted Rocks Lake)

November 22, 2002

Accomplishments through November 22, 2002:
Our winter shut down date will be November 27, with crushing continuing at the Mildenberger pit thru the first week of December.

Pumco, Inc. is getting a handle on the mud, which has been covering the road for the last week or so. Topsoil removal from the reservoir will be completed today, and the road from the campground north will then be cleaned up and the sloppy mud removed from the surface. Topsoil placement on the slopes has pretty much stopped for the season. This week the seeder was on the project and all slopes that did not have snow on them were seeded and stabilized.

Due to weather, the work on Gabion Wall #2 has been suspended for the winter. The roadway has been made passable through this area to two-way traffic for the winter, and next spring when the weather permits work will continue with one-way traffic.

Future Activities planned for the project::
Next week work will only be going on through Wednesday evening, when the work will be suspended for the winter. This work will be cleaning and shaping the road for winter, moving silt fence back up out of the reservoir to the top of the riprap, cleaning up the topsoil source and haul road. If weather permits seeding and stabilization will be done one last time on any previously unseeded slopes that have previously been covered with snow.

Other news of note:
The work shift for the week of November 25 through November 27 will be 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. There will be lights set up at the flagger stations by 4:30 pm and will be in use until 5:00 pm or when the road is passable to traffic. Thank you for your patience and please drive safely through the project and follow the pilot car during the hours of operation.
The project office will be closing for the season the first week of December, so please refer your questions, comments, or concerns to Todd Butikofer at (360) 619-7740 voice mail or the best way, E-mail tbutikof@wfl.fhwa.dot.gov. Thank You and Be Safe!
