Abstract: The first article describes the San Francisco Bay Area SAFE START. It involves five Bay Area community colleges: Canada College, City College of San Francisco, Contra Costa College, De Anza College, and Merritt College. The project is designed to lead to a 2-year community college certificate program in Early Childhood Education (ECE). One goal of SAFE START is to recruit, retain, and train low income/economically disadvantaged students and parents of children in programs that serve low-income families, for careers in ECE. A second goal is to train current child care workers and child care professionals to recognize and understand the effects of violence on young children. A third goal is to provide financial assistance, educational resources, and other college support for program participants. Another section of the newsletter describes the SAFE START Resource Center, which provides information on the program and offers a resource library with multi-cultural material for those who work with children in the area of violence intervention and prevention. Other sections of the newsletter profile program coordinators, student participants, and the National Violence Intervention and Prevention Coalition, which is committed to breaking the cycle of violence.
