deal with the possibility of life in extreme environments or life in
the universe.  You might try one or more of the following:

LIFE ON THE EDGE by Gross
SEARCH FOR LIFE ON MARS by Walter
CRADLE OF LIFE by Schopf
or, at the risk of sounding self promoting,
THE SEARCH FOR LIFE ON OTHER PLANETS by Jakosky

Each of these discusses in its own way how organisms can survive in
environments that might occur on Mars.
