To provide the student with the ability to comprehend, speak, read and write basic Greek. Basic vocabulary and elementary grammatical skills are stressed, along with a focus on modern Greek culture.

Learning Outcome
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to understand spoken Greek involving basic vocabulary; read the Greek alphabet; express basic concepts in Greek utilizing elementary grammatical structures; and understand aspects of contemporary Greek culture.

Instruction
Major topics covered in the course include the Greek alphabet and scripts; the verb έχω; definite articles: η and то; indefinite articles: μια and ένα; auxiliary verb είμαι; demonstrative pronouns - αυтός, αυтή, αυтό; masculine, feminine and neuter word endings; first conjucation verbs ending in -ω; the interrogative adverb πоύ; present tense of βλέπω; three genders of adjectives ending in -оς, -η, -о; - оς, -α, -о; numbers 1-70; the verbs: δείχνω, λέ(γ)ω, μεтώ; pronouns καθένας, καθέμια, καθενα, καθε; auxiliary verb - έίμαι; preposition οтον, οтμ(ν), οтο; απανтώ and ρωтώ; fourth conjugation verbs ending in -ομαι; accusative case of the personal pronoun εγώ; deponent verbs; preposition σε; impersonal verb αρέσει; verbs χαιρεтώ, μιλώ, διδάσκω; accusative case of the masculine, feminine and neuter; undeclineable particle που; nominative plural endings; verbs μπορώ and θέλω; future continuous of verbs είμαι and έχω; and singular and plural objective (accusative) case of masculine.

Vocabulary topics will include school subjects; greetings; food; culture; names; actions; media; days of the week; numbers; locations and culture.

Methods of instruction include lecture, discussion, classroom exercises, case studies, role playing, problem solving, oral participation/proficiency, quizzes, and mid-term and final examinations.
