FY 2008 Request for Applications for the Integrated Research, Education, And Extension Competitive Grants Program: Integrated Pest Management Risk Avoidance and Mitigation Program and Integrated Pest Management Crops at Risk Program / Grants.gov - USDA-CSREES-ICGP-001211 (open Dec 27, 2007)
USDA. Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service.
These programs seek to solve critical agricultural issues, priorities, or problems through the integration of research, education, and extension activities. The program is designed to fund the development of new integrated pest management (IPM) approaches or the improvement of existing IPM systems. The program areas included in this Program RFA are: 1) Crops at Risk; and 2) Risk Avoidance and Mitigation. Projects funded within these program areas will cover a broad range of new methodologies, technologies, systems and strategies for implementing integrated crop and pest management programs.
The closing due date is Feb 29, 2008.

The Plan is intended to address invasive species in the areas of prevention, early detection and rapid response, control, restoration and organizational collaboration. This document is the first revision of the 2001 Plan, as mandated by EO 13112. The 2008-2012 National Invasive Species Management Plan will provide direction for Federal efforts (including overall strategy and objectives) to prevent, control and minimize invasive species and their impacts within the next five fiscal years (2008 through 2012).
Note: All comments must be received by close of business on Feb 11, 2008 -- see Federal Register Notice for more information.

The purpose of the USDA Biotechnology Risk Assessment Grants (BRAG) Program is to assist Federal regulatory agencies in making science-based decisions about the effects of introducing genetically modified organisms into the environment. Investigations of effects on both managed and natural environments are relevant. Estimated total program funding is $3 million.

USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) concluded an investigation into alleged compliance infractions by The Scotts Company, LLC. The investigation related to regulated genetically engineered glyphosate-tolerant creeping bentgrass. Under today's settlement agreement, Scotts has agreed to pay a civil penalty of $500,000 which is the maximum penalty allowed by the Plant Protection Act of 2000.

Chamounix Mansion, Philly's 80 bed hostel in Fairmount Park, is hosting an unusual event during this holiday season. Recognizing that several species of invasive vines are pulling down great numbers of old growth trees throughout the Park, Chamounix is hosting two days of de-vining, this coming Saturday and Sunday, Dec 8-9, 2007. Great Ships Initiative.
The Great Ships Initiative (GSI) is a collaborative effort to end the problem of ship-mediated invasive species in the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway System (GLSLSS) through independent research and demonstration of environmental technology, financial incentives and consistent basin-wide harbor monitoring. The GSI is managed jointly by the Northeast-Midwest Institute, the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and American Great Lakes Ports Association.
The deadline for submitting applications for General Research Services is Jan 4, Apr 4 and Oct 4, 2008. The deadline for submitting applications for Special Research Services is Dec 14, 2007 and Mar 4, 2008.
