Variable-leaved Watermilfoil; New invasive aquatic plant confirmed in Vermont (Oct 13, 2008)
Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation.
Aquatic biologists at the Agency of Natural Resources confirmed the arrival of a new invasive aquatic plant found in Halls Lake in Newbury Vermont, Myriophyllum heterophyllum (variable-leaved watermilfoil).

Invasive Jumping Carp Rode Flood Waters on Mississippi (Dec 2, 2008)
Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
The infamous silver carp, or "jumping carp," has been found in the Mississippi River near La Crosse. This is the first confirmed identification of a silver carp upstream of Clinton, Iowa, and the first identified in Wisconsin waters.

Zebra Mussel Found on Susquehanna River at Conowingo Dam in Maryland: Nine-Mile Long Lake Stretches into Pennsylvania (Nov 24, 2008)
Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
Environmental Protection and Fish and Boat Commission officials have confirmed the discovery of a zebra mussel at the Conowingo Hydroelectric Dam in Maryland; the first time the Driessena polymorpha has been found in the lower Susquehanna River. Signs will be posted at Susquehanna River launching ramps to remind boaters and anglers to report any sightings and to scrub their vessels and equipment before moving them to prevent unwanted hitchhikers.

Zebra Mussels Found in Electric Lake (Nov 18, 2008)
Utah Divison of Wildlife Resources.
A small, high-mountain lake in central Utah is the first body of water in Utah to test positive for zebra mussels. The Division of Wildlife Resources announced Nov 18 that zebra mussel DNA has been found in water samples taken from Electric Lake.

Spiny Water Flea Confirmed in First "Inland" Water (Oct 30, 2008)
New York Department of Environmental Conservation.
The spiny water flea, an aquatic invasive species, has been confirmed as present in the Great Sacandaga Lake in the southern Adirondacks, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced today. Previously, it had been identified in the Great Lakes. This is first time the spiny water flea has been confirmed in an "inland" body of water.

Pathogen Alert: Chrysanthemum White Rust detected in Massachusetts (Sep 26, 2008)
Massachusetts Introduced Pests Outreach Project.
Chrysanthemum white rust (Puccinia horiana, "CWR"), a serious fungal disease of chrysanthemums, has been discovered in Massachusetts. Infected plants were found at nurseries and at retail locations, with diagnoses confirmed by plant pathologists from USDA APHIS-PPQ. This pathogen can spread quickly in greenhouse and nursery environments, causing severe crop losses.

Pest Alert: Asian Longhorned Beetle Detected in Massachusetts (Aug 7, 2008)
Massachusetts Introduced Pests Outreach Project. The Asian longhorned beetle (Anoplophora glabripennis, "ALB"), a pest of hardwood trees including maple, birch and horse chestnut, was recently discovered in Worcester, Massachusetts. This is the first detection of the invasive pest in Massachusetts.

Invasive New Zealand Mud Snail Found in Lake Michigan (Aug 14, 2008)
University of Illinois at Urbana-Chapaign.
Researchers at the Lake Michigan Biological Station, a field station of the Illinois Natural History Survey, discovered a population of New Zealand mud snails while processing a sample from Lake Michigan -- one of the first reported sighting of this species in the lake.
