Statement of Significance (as of designation - December 21, 1965):
Here, on the bleak and barren desert of the White Sands Missile Range, crossed by the Jornada del Muerto (Journey of Death) trail, the world's first nuclear device (code name "Trinity) was exploded on July 16, 1945, at 5:29:45 a.m. It had been brought from the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory in northern New Mexico. The bomb was the forerunner of those dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan in August of 1945 in an effort to hasten the end of World War II in the Pacific. The missile range is still in use, but the site can be visited two days a year.

Condition:
There are no threats to the NHL currently. It is in good condition.
