Hypotheses will be tested by comparing population parameters and CPUE among study sites. In addition to estimates of population density and descriptions of size distributions of crabs, we will characterize the physical condition of individual crabs and the reproductive condition of female crabs during the brooding period. The pre closure studies are essential as they will provide baseline information that will be critical for interpreting the results of the post closure studies. PURPOSE: 1. Estimate the density of Dungeness crabs and characterize the size-frequency distributions by sex and female reproductive state (i.e. ovigerous or nonovigerous) at selected sites in advance of closure of the fishery at a subset of those sites. The null hypotheses are that densities and size distributions do not differ between the sites selected for study. 2. Estimate the reproductive condition of female Dungeness crabs during the brooding season, including determining the proportion of ovigerous females, fecundity, and the percentage of eggs fertilized by size class. Under the null hypotheses the proportion of ovigerous females, fecundity, and the percentage of eggs fertilized do not differ between study sites. 3. Measure the level of physical trauma to the carapace, chelipeds and walking legs of Dungeness crabs in the currently fished populations. The null hypothesis states that no differences exist in the level of physical trauma suffered by Dungeness crabs between the study sites. 4. Measure growth in subadult and adult Dungeness crabs at sites designated for closure of the Dungeness crab fishery and at control sites. Growth increments standardized by carapace width do not differ between study sites under the null hypothesis. 5. Continue the same sampling in the same locales following the commercial fisheries closures in order to test all of the above null hypotheses. 6. Integrate data into the Marine Geographic Information System (MGIS). Two of the selected study sites, north Beardslee,Islands (58033'N 135054'W) and south Beardslee Islands,(58030'N 135054'W) are within Wilderness waters (i.e. soon,to be closed to fishing), two study sites, Berg Bay (58031'N,136013'W) and Bartlett Cove (58027'N 135053'W), are in areas, that may be closed to crab fishing in seven years, and one, study site, Gustavus Flats (58023'N 135043'W), is outside, the Park and will remain open to commercial fishing. Two,additional study sites, upper Dundas Bay(58026'N 136031'W),and lower Dundas Bay(58021'N 136020'W), were established in,1993 to study the effects of sea otters on Dungeness crab, populations. One of these sites is currently occupied by sea, otters (lower Dundas Bay), while the other (upper Dundas,Bay) is nearby and is a probable location for otters to soon, reoccupy. Commercial crab pots measuring,0.91 m in diameter and 0.36 m deep are used for crab, collection. The crab pots are baited with salmon or cod, hanging bait and chopped squid and herring in bait cups. The,pots are allowed to fish for 24 hours. The escape ports are, sealed with webbing to retain smaller crabs. Twice a year,(April and September), we set 50 pots in each bay. The bays, are fished on 5 consecutive days. Twenty-five pots are set,in relatively shallow water (0-9m) and 25 are set deep,(10-25m) at each site. Depth, GPS location, time of pot set,and time of pot pull are recorded for each pot. Depth is,later converted to depth relative to mean lower low water.,Water temperature and salinity profiles are recorded in each, bay during each sampling period with a SEABIRD SBE 19,Profiler, a profiling conductivity-temperature-depth meter,(CTD). As pots are pulled, number and species of all, organisms in the pot are recorded. Dungeness crabs are, measured, examined and returned to the water. Carapace width,(immediately anterior to the 10th anterolateral spine) is,measured in millimeters using vernier calipers. Shell, condition is determined by appearance and feel: Soft - is,soft to the touch; New - spines are sharp, shell is clean, and free of fouling organisms; Old - shell is not as bright,,spines are dull, some fouling organisms present; Skip-molt -,spins are very dull, shell has fouling organisms (Somerton, and Macintosh 1983). All appendages are examined and all, incidences of damaged, regenerating or missing appendages, are recorded. Damage to the carapace is also recorded,(Shirley and Shirley 1988). Females are examined for sperm, plugs, eggs, or matted setae. Color of the clutches of,ovigerous females is recorded. Dungeness females that have, eggs or matted setae are considered to be "reproductive",females.
