Summary
This data set contains information on the foraging ecology, energetics, and breeding biology of the Antarctic fulmarine petrel seabird community breeding on Hop Island, Prydz Bay, Antarctica. Species involved in the study include the Antarctic fulmar (Fulmarus glacialoides), Antarctic petrel (Thalassoica antarctica), Cape petrel (Daption capense), and snow petrel ... (Pagodroma nivea). We conducted the research on Hop Island, Prydz Bay, Antarctica during three consecutive breeding seasons, from 1993-94 through 1995-96. Methods employed during the study include: water offloading to collect diet samples from breeding adults doubly-labelled water (DLW) technique to measure energy consumption and expenditure in nestlings and breeding adults stable isotope analyses (SIA) to determine community trophic structure, compare trophic levels, and complement the conventional dietary data measures of breeding biology parameters including laying, hatching, and fledging dates; hatching and fledging success; laying effort in marked colonies; fledging masses; incubation, brooding, and nestling period lengths; incubation and brooding shift lengths; nestling growth rates measures of foraging parameters including meal size, nestling growth, and foraging trip length/nestling provisioning rate. These data were collected for all four species and over multiple seasons.
