Dingell Comments on Discouraging New Unemployment Numbers

Washington, DC - Congressman John D. Dingell (D-MI15) made the following statement today after the Department of Labor released its employment report for May showing a loss of 49,000 jobs, and an unemployment rate that increased to 5.5 percent – the biggest monthly rise since 1986:

“Today’s job numbers are another indication that the stimulus checks, while being helpful, will not go far enough to help Americans in troubling economic times. We need solutions that will help our nation immediately, like an extension in unemployment benefits, unemployment compensation, and good public works programs that will not only fix our roads and bridges but put people into good jobs. The House included an unemployment benefits extension in the Iraq war supplemental and it is my hope that it will remain in the supplemental when the House considers the final package.  However, I hope in 2009 to create some long term solutions starting with reversing the damage this Administration has done to our manufacturing sector. This year, we have averaged higher monthly job losses in manufacturing than both 2007 and 2006.  This year, the U.S. manufacturing sector has averaged 41,000 job losses a month compared with 22,000 a month in 2007 and 14,000 a month in 2006. We need a President who will make the changes we need to address these problems, not one who will simply maintain the status quo.”
