Snails (Phylum Mollusca, Class Gastropoda)

Two major groups of fossil snails are found at Florissant: the lung-bearing freshwater snails (Order Lymnophila) and the land snails (Order Geophila). Most of the fossil snails found at Florissant still have living relatives in western North America. Like modern snails, Florissant's snails were probably hardy animals living in both the streams that flowed into the lake and the lake itself, feeding on algae growing on rocks and in the mud.
