The case of routine ultrasound in normal pregnancy (RUNP) in Switzerland.

Koch P, Horisberger B; International Society of Technology Assessment in Health Care. Meeting.

Annu Meet Int Soc Technol Assess Health Care Int Soc Technol Assess Health Care Meet. 1997; 13: 171.

Federal Office for Social Insurances, Berne, Switzerland.

Regulation of obligatory maternity benefits including RUNP through Swiss government in 1995 was prepared following the usual scientific, democratic political path for technology reimbursement. The system will be described. Based on existent technology assessment facts, the government, in a first round, decided not to cover RUNP. However, ultrasound examinations should be reimbursed upon medical indication only. Following that decision a never seen and unprecedented campaign was launched by consumers (pregnant women), interested parties and mass media, slides & videotapes to be shown. Eventually the government agreed in 1996 to compromise on a temporary basis with the obligation of providers to evaluate consequences and outcomes during the next five years (details to be reported).
