Program or Study Name: Biannual Bluetongue Survey
General Information:
Species: Cattle
Disease:   Bluetongue
Contact Agency:   USDA, APHIS, VS, CEAH, National Animal Health Monitoring System (NAHMS)
Overview:   The Biannual Bluetongue Survey was conducted every other year until 2002. It included sample collection in selected core states for a 6-8 week period during the fall. Serum samples were collected from adult cattle at slaughter and sent to the National Veterinary Services Laboratory (NVSL) for testing. The results from the study were reported at USAHA (United States Animal Health Association) and used to support trade access with Canada.
Disease Information:
Disease Information:   Bluetongue virus (BTV) is a vector-borne pathogen in the family orbivirus. It is found worldwide, generally distributed between the latitudes 45 degrees North and 35 degrees South. BTV is not contagious and is transmitted by flies between ruminant species, with cattle serving as the reservoir. Clinical signs in most affected ruminants include: difficulty breathing; hyperemia of lips, muzzle, and ears; pyrexia; depression; excessive nasal discharge; facial lesions; cyanotic tongue (blue tongue); coronitis; muscle necrosis; pneumonia; conjunctivitis; and alopecia. Cattle rarely exhibit oral lesions. Control measures include vaccination of sheep and insect control. The economic impacts of BTV are quite significant, especially in the U.S. large cattle industry, given the potential export losses with an infected herd.
Details about the Surveillance Program or Study:
Population:   Samples were collected in selected states from eligible adult cattle at slaughter.
Coverage:   Surveillance occurred biannually, during a 6-8 week time period each fall in the selected core states, with an occasional additional state included.
Data collection
location(s):
  Samples were collected at slaughter for bluetongue testing.
Samples Collected:   Serum samples were collected for bluetongue testing.
Data Collected:   Animal identification, species, place of discovery and test results are collected with each serum sample.
Frequency:   Samples were collected every other year for a 6-8 week time period in the fall. 2002 was the final year of sample collection.
Reporting / Information Distribution Process:   NVSL reported BTV test results to CEAH for analysis. The results of the study were also reported to USAHA, participating states, and Canada.
Scope:   The survey covered samples taken from selected core states.
