Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award Ceremony
March 9, 2004

Remarks by John Heer
President
Baptist Hospital, Inc.

Thank you Mr. President and Secretary Evans.

It is truly an honor and a privilege to accept this award on behalf of the employees, medical staff and Board of Directors of Baptist Hospital, Inc.

First, let me thank the 2,250 employees of Baptist Hospital, Gulf Breeze Hospital and Baptist Medical Park. Without their dedication to our patients, our physicians, and one another, this day would not be possible.

Second, I would like to thank the Board of Directors for their continued support and encouragement on our Baldrige journey. Their vision and foresight have been an integral part of this process.

Third, I’d like to thank our medical staff. Their unwavering commitment to the practice of medicine and our patients drives the results we’ve achieved in patient satisfaction and clinical quality.

Finally, I would like to encourage other health care providers to adopt the Baldrige process and create a cultural transformation in their organizations. There are a lot of headlines and news stories about health care, not all of which are positive. But, there are a lot of positive things happening every day in hospitals and health systems across the country. Babies are being born, lives are being saved and people’s lives are being forever positively changed through our healing efforts. As health care leaders, our responsibility is to take great care of our employees, create an atmosphere that fosters patient satisfaction, and do so in a safe, patient-focused environment.
