Red bonaerense de personas viviendo con VIH, Buenos Aires, Argentina

THEME: In the Province of Buenos Aires there are 2 million inhabitants. This municipality has the one of the highest rates of people living with HIV/AIDS (PVVS) in Argentina. Additionally, many people live in abject poverty thus contributing to a high incidence of vertical transmission. DESCRIPTION: Due to the lack of answers, commitment and information from responsible authorities within this municipality, PVVS formed a group called the Southwestern Buenosairean Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS. We meet weekly and participate in advising, counseling sessions, and political action. The groups work in conjunction with that of the patient - we realized that many of them did not know necessary and important information. LEARNED LESSONS: We decided to bring everybody together and teach each other about many subject areas having to do with the municipality. We raised awareness about secondary prevention, legal and odontological services, using a resource guide and also providing education about condom use. Additionally, we talked of the importance of being well cared for and consulting a specialist. RECOMMENDATIONS: It is important to include PVVS in communication for behavioral and health changes. In this way, we can get greater access to the health systen and also end stigmatization and discrimination of PVVS.
