Abstract: | Abstract: A technical review outlines various available sweetener substitutes, and discusses the safety of each and its relative blood glucose elevating ability in diabetes. Attention is given to both nutritive (fructose, xylitol, sorbitol) and nonnutritive (saccharin, aspartame) sugar substitutes. The advantages, disadvantages, and metabolism of the nutritive substitutes are discussed. General information also is included on the use of dietetic foods for diabetics.(wz). |
