  • Primary Uses or Exposures: Saccharin is used primarily as a nonnutritive sweetening agent.
  • Nominated by: Calorie Control Council (CCC)
  • Basis for Nomination: First listed in the 2nd RoC (1981) as reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen based on sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity in animals. The CCC requested the NTP review saccharin in 1997 on the basis of the extensive data from research supporting the safety of saccharin for human consumption.
  • Current Status: Removed from listing in the 9th RoC; See Appendix B
