References

References are dated by their year of publication, when this is known. For some publications, such as volumes of Trans. Seism. Sec. Japan, the year of publication is not known. In these cases, we date the reference by the year given in the title of the particular volume. Abbreviations of most periodicals are taken from World List of Scientific Periodicals, 1900-1960, 4th edition, P. Brown and G. B. Stratton, Ed., Butterworths, London, 1963. Three other abbreviations are Bull. vulc. ital. (Bulleltino del Vulcanismo Italiano), Trans. Seism. Soc. Japan (Transactions Seismological Society of Japan), and Seism. J. Japan (Seismological Journal of Japan). An asterisk (*) beside a reference indicates that this reference was not available to us in its original form.
