Fermilab, April 23, 1999 Dear colleague: Today Jim Christenson resigned as Co-Project manager of the D0 Upgrade and Head of the D0 Project/Department. His note which is attached, was sent to D0 Upgrade Subproject managers, spokesmen and the FNAL Directorate. The main reason for this note is to inform you about this fact, because many of you in D0 are hearing rumors without knowing exactly what is happening. After we received this note we had a meeting at 1:00pm today with mainly people involved in the upgrade hardware and software. At this meeting we presented some additional information, but mainly asked for advice and feedback on what to do in the near future. After this meeting we had a conversation with the Fermilab directorate, where we outlined how we think we should proceed at least for the near term. One of the items here was a possible postponement of the Lehman review in June of this year. This and several other items were brought up during the discussion at the 1:00pm D0 meeting. Current status and working scenario: 1) The Lehman review will happen in June, in a large part motivated by the desire to have it happen while the current director is still in office. 2) The Upgrade Project managers will be M. Tuts, H. Weerts and H.Montgomery will act as Head of the D0 Department/Project. There were several comments at the 1:00pm D0 meeting that this is not the optimal solution, especially since the spokesmen are now taking on additional duties. We realize this and it is understood that the Project Management/Spokesmen arrangement may change. This overview is not necessarily complete and we will try to correct that as we proceed. However we felt that it is important to keep the collaboration informed. As always we appreciate any feedback you give us. Harry & Mont ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From Jim Christenson: It is with a deep sense of regret that I tender my resignation as Co- Project Manager of the DØ Upgrade and as Head of the DØ Project (Department). I have found it increasingly difficult to interact productively and amicably with the Fermilab Director and Deputy Director. They do not have a good and clear understanding of the state of our project and they feel that we will not be able to meet our new schedule. They are concerned about my ability to manage the project. Concerns about DØ alone triggered the upcoming Lehman reviews. This is clearly an untenable situation for DØ. For our project to flourish, it is necessary that we have the full and enthusiastic support of the Director and that DØ project management be willing and eager to work with them. DØ has embarked on a strong and imaginative upgrade to prepare for the challenges and opportunities of Run II and has made remarkable progress. There is no doubt that the experiment will continue its impressive record of accomplishment. I share in this excitement. It is a tremendous personal loss to me that I can no longer help manage this wonderful adventure. You must know that none of my difficulties and frustrations arises from within DØ. Jim
