Description/Abstract Expansion of Venezuela`s Guri hydropower project will nearly triple the size of the concrete structure, extend its adjacent embankments by miles, and add a second powerhouse, increasing its generating capacity sevenfold and making it one of the most powerful hydroelectric dams in the world.^Preliminary work worth about $80 million is already under way and on Oct.^15 a prime contract was let for the expansion estimated at $1.5 billion to $2 billion.^Upon completion of the Raul Leoni Dam in 1987, it will impound 110 million acre-ft of water and may briefly claim a record generating capacity of 10,087 MW.^A year later Itaipu Dam will be completed on the Parana River between Brazil and Paraguay, taking the title with an installed capacity of 12,600 MW.^(MCW)
