Babu earns international welding award

OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Aug. 13, 2003 — The Welding Institute of the United Kingdom has presented an award to Sudarsanam Suresh Babu of the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory for his contributions to welding technology.

Babu is a senior research and development staff member in ORNL's Metals and Ceramics Division.

The award is presented to a person under 40 years old who is deemed to have made the most significant contribution - not associated with the manufacture and supply of welding consumables and equipment - to the advancement of welding technology during the preceding five years.

Babu's research at ORNL has focused on basic and applied research in welding metallurgy, phase transformations in steel, aluminum alloys and nickel-based superalloys.

Before joining ORNL in 1993 as a post-doctoral student, Babu was a research associate at the Institute for Materials Research at Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan.

Babu earned a bachelor's degree in engineering metallurgy from the P.S.G. College of Technology in Coimbatore, India, a master's in industrial metallurgy from the Indian Institute of Technology and a doctorate in materials science from the University of Cambridge in England.

He and his wife, Anuradha Suresh Babu, have two children - Anisha and Varsha - and reside in West Knoxville.

ORNL is a multiprogram science and technology laboratory managed by UT-Battelle for the Department of Energy.
