Selected Research Accomplishments

  • I devised techniques to estimate ixodid tick density on beef cattle, to measure damage responses in cattle to tick infestation, and to identify damage and economic thresholds. I studied dispersion and diel activity in cattle and free-living tick populations to develop sampling methods for the latter and constructed a spatio-temporal model of cattle-tick contact that quantified the effects of host behavior on tick distribution.
  • I combined understanding of interaction effects in temperature-driven developmental models for Musca domestica with new knowledge of nutrient availability in the manure medium to identify bionomic parameters that indicate efficiency in fly-based manure degradation systems.
  • I published methods and techniques to identify, isolate, and mitigate error in mosquito repellent bioassays in the laboratory and field and for characterizing the effects of mosquito density, formulation, and repellent concentration on repellent activity.
  • I am currently developing methods to estimate adult mosquito density in nature and techniques to enable the proper use of mosquito trapping data in GIS-based depictions of vector activity.
