Statement of Significance (as of designation - December 21, 1965):
This three-story brick house is historically significant as the home of Henry Barnard (1811-1900) who, as the first U.S. Commissioner of Education, helped stimulate the growth of the public school system in this country. From 1855 to 1882, Barnard's 31-volume "American Journal of Education" made material on educational practices and techniques available to teachers across the country.
