RSMAS SMALL BOAT OPERATIONS POLICY & PROCEDURES
Small Boat Mission Statement
To provide the local scientific community with a reliable working platform to accommodate field research in the coastal zone marine environment.
Policy & Procedures Purpose
To standardize the practice of preparation, checkout, proper use and safety protocols for RSMAS small boat operations.
Responsibilities of the Marine Department
- Maintenance and up-keeping of RSMAS Small Boat Inventory.
- Training and education of boat users as required to ensure safe operations of boats and related field activities.
- Establish guidelines for safe operations of RSMAS small boats.
Boat User Eligibility & Qualifications
Any RSMAS faculty, staff, student, or related scientific community member who demonstrates competency in the following areas:
- Pass a written exam based on U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) regulation or possess a USCG Captain’s license.
- Demonstrates familiarity with the vessel to be, including plumbing and mechanical systems.
- Demonstrates good boat handling skills at RSMAS pier and area of operation.
- Demonstrates good local knowledge including hazards to navigation.
Checkout Procedures
- Qualified RSMAS boat operators must submit a trip requisition form, obtainable from the Marine Department, within 48 hours of advanced notice.
- RSMAS dockmaster prepares the boat and checks gear/equipment for proper operation and briefs user on any necessary information to ensure the safe operation of the boat.
- User conducts equipment/safety check and verifies all in apparent good working order and together with the dockmaster discusses and/or corrects any discrepancies.
- Boat is deployed in accordance with the Trip Slip Float Plan.
Check In Procedures
- Boat user briefs dockmaster on any operational or activity problems related to the boat and reports and damage incurred (i.e., mechanical, electrical, plumbing, etc.).
- User and dockmaster check all safety equipment for good condition and return all items to the Boat Shop.
- User performs final cleaning of the boat and removes all personal and/or scientific gear/equipment.
