The FTS2001 program was designed to provide government users with up-to-date, cost-effective, and easy to utilize telecommunications services. The first FTS2001 contract was awarded to Sprint in December 1998. The second FTS2001 contract was awarded to MCI/ Worldcom in January 1999. These contracts expired in December 2006 and January 2007, respectively.

GSA awarded the Verizon FTS2001 Bridge Contract in July 2006, and the Sprint FTS2001 Bridge Contract in August 2006. They include a two-year base period and three six-month options. The bridge contracts became effective when the original contracts expired and ensure that customer requirements will be met while transitioning to the follow on program, Networx.

The FTS2001 program strategy included a mechanism which allowed the contractors to crossover into the local services market and Metropolitan Area Acquisition (MAA) contractors to crossover into the long distance market provided that certain conditions were met. The first MAA crossover contract was awarded to IDT/Winstar in November 2001, followed by Verizon in January 2002, AT&T in April 2002, Qwest in May 2002, and SBC in February 2003. These contracts have been extended to run concurrent with the FTS2001 Bridge contracts.

The Networx program serves as the primary replacement for the expiring FTS2001 Bridge and Crossover contracts.
