Waterbeds
Energy Saving Tips:
- Purchase a soft-side waterbed as opposed to hard-side wood frame. More insulation.
- A soft-sided bed uses a 125 watt heater. At an average use of 2000 hours per year, your annual consumption will be about 381 kilowatt-hours (almost $40 at $0.10/kWh).
- A hard-sided bed uses a 350-400 watt heater, corresponding to annual consumption of 700 kilowatt-hours per year (or about $70).
- The deeper the bed, the more your energy bill.
- Shallow-fill beds (4" fill) -- some you don't even need a heater. Ask the vendors which ones come with a thermal comforter. Posture Cloud Beauty rest is one.
- Mid-fill beds (6" fill) -- some don't need a heater (e.g. Somma beds and beds with convoluted foam insulation)
- Deep fill (8") -- typically need a heater. Somma doesn't require one.
For those heating their waterbeds, consider a new solid state heater (http://abwaterbeds.com/heaters.html), which uses around half the energy of the older ones and extends the lifetime of the heater itself.
