Normal T cells infected with HIV in vitro are independent of thyroid hormone.

Previous studies have suggested that at a cellular level, a given disease state may effect cell function. Therefore diseased cells may function without as much dependence on metabolic cues as do normal cells. We hypothesized that if HIV infected cells function independent of thyroid hormone, a reversible hypothyroid state could be induced and the vast majority of cells that are uninfected would become hypometabolic. Alternatively, infected cells would continue at the higher baseline metabolic rate. Therapeutically, infected cells should then theoretically take up a higher percent of medications by comparison to uninfected cells. We performed experiments to determine if HIV infected T cells depend on thyr. hormone for replication of HIV. No statistically significant difference was observed in HIV replication as assessed by p24 levels in infected T cell cult. for any of the 4 levels of thyr. hormone that were examined (to include one group with no thyroid hormone present). If HIV replication was dependent upon thyroid hormone there would be an expected correlation with p24 levels with thyroid hormone levels (a steady increase in p24 levels as thyroid hormone dose increased). These results indicate in vitro HIV replication appears to be independent of thyroid hormone.
