The northern horizon had been luminous since nine o'clock with a faint Aurora Borealis which was continually changing from an apple green to a light yellow [I noticed no such changes] Sometimes delicate stripes of the latter tint at equal distances apart, would come and go, at a height of thirty degrees above the horizon. Suddenly a long streak of light shot up from a point where none of these shifting gleams of light had been seen before. It started about ten degrees above the horizon, and rose two thirds of the way to the zenith. It swelled towards the centre to a breadth of four or five degrees and then tapered off to a point curving in its shape towards the end." I noticed nothing of the last description but it probably corresponds with the line of light described by myself, it being about the same width and probably a change of position to New York would produce the dissimilarity. 1863 4 9 MIDDLETOWN CONNECTICUT Aur. It passed some 10o or 15o south of the zenith, and pretty exactly through the body of Leo. At the time I saw it (9.45) the eastern end terminated as much as 20o above the horizon. It was sharply defined and very nearly stationary. In the west there was a parallel belt, about 8o or 10o north of the principal one, narrower and brighter, extending from the horizon to the height of 20o. The sky was perfectly clear except near the horizon. There was at the time a bank of auroral light at the north. The principal bow disappeared before 10 p.m. [Caswell] At 9 p.m. sky clear, a belt of light several degrees in width extended from a point north of west in a line to the same distance south of east reaching nearly to the horizon. [Sheldon] 1863 4 9 BRANDON VERMONT Aurora first observed at a quarter past 8 p.m. Bright rays extend to near the zenith from E to NW. Bright luminous patches suddenly form and disappear for about 10 minutes a little south of zenith. At 8.30' a bright luminous narrow belt extends from the eastern horizon to a little past the zenith. At 8.40 Narrow belt across the sky from east to west of extreme brightness and pointed at both ends at the horizon - wider in the middle. Light apparently in motion from east to west. At 9 the east end of the belt has passed a little further south, and rays shoot up from north, east and west in irregular broken fragments and meet at the zenith. At 9.5' the belt passes a little further south and grows paler. At 9.20' belt nearly gone, leaving a few bright streaks at an angle of about 45o from the south. Rays extend from SE to W. and cover the whole northern horizon. At 9.30' belt entirely gone. Patches of diffuse light fill the northern heavens and extend about 15o south of zenith. At 9.40' light grows paler and falls back to the north. On the whole it was a splendid exhibition. 1863 4 9 BROOKFIELD VERMONT On the evening of April 9th, I observed a very singular, and beautiful Aurora; - It commenced in the north, at eight p.m., in the form of a bright cloud, which soon extended round the horizon to the southeast; - From 8-1/4 to 9, the sky was filled with streamers, passing from all parts of the cloud to the zenith; - It extended from 10o east of [character illegible] East to 20o North of West, by compass, and 50o in height as near as I could measure; - Soon after its formation, streamers commenced to [one word illegible] from East to West, following the upper part of the arch from one horizon to the other; - Occasionally a number of streamers would start in the East, and move with a slow, majestic, waving motion over to the West, in an upright position; - This phenomenon continued for about twenty minutes, when the cloud disappeared, and a bright arch formed in the North 80o in height, with a dark cloud beneath; - At 10-1/4 the arch and cloud had sunk to within about 20o of the horizon, and seemed nearly level, with the upper edge of the cloud notched like the teeth of a saw; Above this appeared a bright narrower streak, that gave out light sufficient to cast a shadow as bright as the moon usually does, when four or five days old; - This also disappeared about eleven, and at twelve, nothing remained to be seen worth mentioning; - There were also some other circumstances that are perhaps worth mentioning; - During the continuance of the arch in the south, I noticed four or five stars of the first and second magnitudes, that had the appearance of having tails, or trains like those of a comet attached to them; these were from 8o to 10o in length, and all pointed to the zenith; these stars were situated just above the highest curve of the arch, and their cometary appearance continued while the arch lasted; - I also observed my compass needle to be very much affected; there was hardly any time when it was perfectly still, and very often varying from 6 to 8o on each side of the North point. 1863 4 9 MONTPELIER VERMONT Aurora Borealis - very brilliant 1863 4 10 CORNISH MAINE N.
