UPTON, NY - A classical Indian Kathak dance performance will
be held at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National
Laboratory on Sunday, June 27, at 4 p.m. in Berkner Hall. The
performance is open to the public.
Developed about 500 years ago in northern India, Kathak dance
is an interpretive form of dance that portrays stories from Indian
mythology and contemporary themes. Dressed in colorful costumes
with more than a hundred tiny bells tied around each ankle, Kathak
dancers use intricate footwork and various rhythmic patterns to
tell their stories. The Brookhaven performance will feature Maneesha
Sathe and her students. Ms. Sathe has more than 200 choreographies
to her credit, and she has previously performed in the U.S., Canada
and Japan, as well as India.
Tickets for the performance may be purchased at the door on the
afternoon of the performance. The cost is $10 for adults, $5
for students, and $3 for children 5 years old and under.
