All Quiet on the Y2K Front Commissioner Kelly's Message
(01/01/2000)No news was good news this morning as America awoke to a peaceful day on the first day of the Year 2000. It was no accident that everything went smoothly. Working through the night, over 400 Customs personnel at our special command center, made certain there were no glitches. Our Information Technology (I.T.) staff, in particular, is to be congratulated for painstaking preparation and diligent follow through. Across the country, at ports of entry large and small, the men and women of the Customs Service stood watch. Your vigilance prevented suspected terrorists from entering the United States in recent weeks. Unknown additional threats may have been deterred as a result. The role of U.S. Customs in safeguarding America on this momentous date is now a matter of record. It is also a matter for history. The words of the medal citation for our Port Angeles inspectors is fitting for the entire Customs family today: You have brought great credit upon yourselves, the United States Customs Service, and the United States of America. Congratulations for outstanding work. Raymond W. Kelly Commissioner |
