"The message that the United States will take to the Summit is that we will continue to provide support to those countries that take the necessary steps to promote their self-reliance," said Glickman. "In a world of diminishing development assistance resources, the most important thing that food-insecure countries can do is adopt national policies that ensure stability, promote sustainable development, and encourage private enterprise." The World Food Summit is being convened by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. FAO is seeking a renewed commitment from world leaders to eradicate hunger and malnutrition and achieve food security for all through concerted policies and actions at the global, regional, and national levels. This commitment will be expressed through adoption of a policy statement and a plan of action. Glickman said that Eugene Moos, Under Secretary of Agriculture for Farm and Foreign Agricultural Services, and Timothy E. Wirth, Under Secretary for Global Affairs, U.S. Department of State, will serve as alternate delegates to the Summit. Other members of the delegation are: Senior Advisors: Melinda Kimble, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for International Organizations; Jeff Lang, Deputy U.S. Trade Representative; Diana Josephson, Deputy Under Secretary, U.S. Department of Commerce; Catherine Woteki, Under Secretary of Agriculture for Research, Education, and Economics; and August Schumacher, Jr., Administrator, Foreign Agricultural Service. Advisors: Nils M. Daulaire, Deputy Assistant Administrator for Policy and Program Coordination, U.S. Agency for International Development; Thomas Forbord, Permanent Representative to FAO; Avram E. Guroff, U.S. National Secretary for the World Food Summit, FAS; Leonard M. Rogers, Deputy Assistant Administrator, Bureau for Humanitarian Response, U.S. Agency for International Development; and Frank Vacca, Alternate Permanent Representative to FAO. In addition, 10 private sector advisors will attend the Summit. They will advise the U.S. delegation and participate in negotiations of World Food Summit documents, as well as attenda Nongovernmental Organization (NGO) Forum and other activities, which will take place at the same time as the World Food Summit.
