Dr. Rishbeth's research interests span a broad range of important topics over the last half of the 20th century. From 1955-58 Dr. Rishbeth began his scientific career in galatic radio astronomy while at the University of Cambridge. Dr. Rishbeth's interest and relationship with ionospheric physics began during this period. Upon completion of his doctoral research, Dr. Rishbeth served as a Senior Research Fellow at the Radio Research Station in Slough, UK from 1960-62. Then in 1962 he became a consultant to the National Bureau of Standards in Boulder, CO. Dr. Rishbeth then returned to the United Kingdom in 1965 to conduct research at the Radio and Space Research Station/Appleton Laboratory/Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Slough; being named Individual Merit Scientist in 1972 and serving Deputy Director from 1977-79. In 1981 Dr. Rishbeth became a Senior Visiting Fellow at the University of Southampton. Later Dr. Rishbeth was appointed Visiting Professor 1990, Research Professor in 1991, and was named Emeritus Professor in 1996. In addition, Dr. Rishbeth has served as a visiting Professor to over a dozen universities and research institutions thorughout the world during this time.

Dr. Rishbeth has held many positions during his career such as the UK Project Scientist for the European Incoherent Scatter (EISCAT) Radar Project from 1974-84; as a member of the EISCAT Scientific Advisory Committee from 1976-84, serving as Chairman of the committee from 1976-78; and as a Member of Council of EISCAT from 1979-86. He has also served on the Royal Astronomical Society, the Union of Radio Science (URSI), International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy, International Council of Scientific Unions, the Federation of Astronomical and Geophysical Services, and the International Academy of Astronautics to name a few.

Dr. Rishbeth has authored over 200 papers and publications, served as editor for 9 special journal issues, and co-authored with Owen K. Garriott one of the topic keystones "Introduction to Ionospheric Physics" [Academic Press, New York, 1969]. Dr. Rishbeth received numerous awards including the Appleton Prize for Ionospheric Physics from the Royal Society/International Union of Radio Science in 1981 and was named the 1995 Marcel Nicolet Lecturer by the American Geophysical Union.
