Annotation: THIS DOCUMENT IDENTIFIES SPECIFIC USER NEEDS FOR TYPES OF INFORMATION TO BE PROVIDED BY THE PROPOSED CRIMINALISTICS LABORATORY INFORMATION SYSTEM.
Abstract: TWELVE ON-SITE LABORATORY VISITS WERE MADE AND 176 LABORATORIES WERE SURVEYED. INTERVIEW GUIDES AND SURVEY QUESTIONNAIRES ARE APPENDED. INFORMATIONAL AREAS IDENTIFIED BY THESE LABS INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: SOURCES OF STANDARD SAMPLES; COMPILATION OF STATISTICS TO DETERMINE SPECIMEN UNIQUENESS; ANALYTICAL/IDENTIFICATION SUPPORT; BIBLIOGRAPHIC INFORMATION AND LITERATURE ABSTRACTS; RIFLING SPECIFICATIONS; SOURCES OF SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE; SOURCES OF SPECIALIZED REAGENTS; COMPUTATION DATA AND CAPABILITY; AND EXPLOSIVE TAGGING. THESE NEED AREAS ARE BRIEFLY DEFINED. OTHER SURVEY RESULTS ARE PRESENTED, INCLUDING THE PERCENTAGE OF QUESTIONS ANSWERED, PERSONNEL INFORMATION, A LIST OF AUTOMATED LABORATORY INFORMATION SYSTEMS, AND INSTRUMENTATION IN USE.
